Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become starving," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
